Essential Job Functions: 

  • Provide direct services to SMA clients in the form of medical evaluations, consultations, history and physicals, treatment planning, medication administration/adjustments, mental status assessments, supportive therapy and crisis intervention.
  • Performs medical management of medical conditions.
  • Prescribe and monitor effects of medications on clients.
  • Educate clients as to the nature of their illness and the importance of proper medication use.
  • Evaluates clients who are decompensating and initiates emergency medical treatment through the Baker Act or refers to SMA's Emergency Services as appropriate.
  • Document all relevant information regarding the client in the electronic medical record (EMR) including, but not limited to, evaluations, prescriptions, mental status assessment, treatment plans, etc., in accordance with standard procedures for documentation established by CARF, Medicaid, DCF and SMA's Quality Improvement Department.
  • Participates as part of a treatment team with nurses, other physicians, case managers, receptionists, therapists, etc. 
  • Participates in staff meetings as required by program guidelines.
  • Reports any serious deficiencies or medication errors immediately to supervisor, and documents such on the appropriate Occurrence Report form.
  • Attend meetings, committees, and in-service training as instructed by supervisor.
  • Provides shadowing and learning opportunities for nursing/medical students.
  • Follows all by-laws and regulations of SMA and affiliated hospitals and provides medical services as directed.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and/or Experience: Minimum APRN with a Florida License. Psychiatric ANCC Certification may be required depending on program. Current BLS Certification or CPR Certification as required by program.  Additional experience, education, and/or certification may be required depending on program.

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of common chronic medical conditions, procedures, and medications related to the treatment of targeted population.
  • Knowledge of pharmacology, physical assessments, and neurological evaluations.
  • Knowledge of treatment interventions/techniques and common clinical conditions for children and adults.
  • Knowledge of common side effects of medications used to treat conditions demonstrated by children and adults.
  • Skills to monitor client condition and assess behavior specific to the age and disability of the client.
  • Ability to follow procedures for documentation in client's permanent medical record.
  • Ability to maintain composure in an emergency/stressful situation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and develop professional relationships with clients, staff and other allied health professionals.

Necessary Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Florida driver's license, acceptable driving record, and proof of personal automobile insurance if required to drive an SMA vehicle and/or use a personal vehicle for SMA business. Complete State of Florida mandatory background screening prior to start of employment.  Complete SMA required training during the first six (6) months of employment and updated if required.  Current BLS Certification or CPR Certification as required by program. 

Physical: Mobility and ability to bend and reach during an 8-12 hour day. Able to lift minimum 10 pounds. Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to evaluate, intervene, treat, and record client health care needs. Fine motor skills for legible and accurate charting, daily correspondence and presentation, either manually or orally. Work endurance ability to work 8-12 hour shifts with a meal break, as possible. Routine 8-12 hour shifts. Hours and days off may vary. Extra hours may be required. Work assignment locations may vary.
